Cougars, Vikings fall on tennis court

The Janesville Craig High boys tennis team ran into one of the top teams in the state Tuesday, and the results weren’t favorable to the Cougars.

Middleton swept the visiting Cougars 7-0.

The highlight for the Cougars was the play of No. 2 singles player Ethan Eno. Eno lost 6-1, 7-6 (7-2).

“Ethan came back after losing the first set and came up just short in the tiebreaker,” Craig coach Justin Long said. “Middleton is one of the top five teams in the state. We battled, but they’re just better than us.”

The Cougars (1-7 in the Big Eight) host Janesville Parker at home on Thursday.

MIDDLETON 7, CRAIG 0

Singles—Ben Luskin (M) def. Izaya Turenne, 6-0, 6-1; Dan Jin (M) def. Ethan Eno, 6-1, 7-6 (7-2); Harish Veeramani (M) def. Bearach McCarthy, 6-0, 6-0; Oscar Biggs (M) def. Christian Voskuil, 6-0, 6-0.

Doubles—Brian Bellissimo-Xavier Sasca (M) def. Adam Masters-Jimmy Flynn, 6-1, 6-0; Andy Weber-Cody Markel (M) def. Ross Sroda-Aaron Cornelio, 6-0, 6-0; Brent Anderson-Mason Pyle (M) def. Gavin Dillavou-Connor Jensen, 6-2, 6-0.

Junior varsity—Middleton 6, Craig 1.

 

•  Sun Prairie 5, Parker 2—At Janesville, the Vikings won at the top two doubles spots, but the Cardinals swept singles to earn the Big Eight victory.

Nick Garey and Sam Buck teamed up to win at No. 1 doubles after surviving a roller-coaster first set, 7-5. Kyle Popovich and Zac Brandenburg cruised at the No. 2 spot.

“Sun Prairie has got one of the best singles lineups in the league,” Parker coach Mike Fuhrmann said. “I was very pleased with our doubles teams. I was real proud of the determination of our No. 1 doubles team.

“Two doubles is really starting to hit their peak. They’ve been playing great tennis.”

Parker plays at Beloit tonight before facing rival Craig on Thursday.
