Janesville Craig scored the first run of the game in the first inning, but the Cougars were shut out the rest of the way in a 3-1 loss at Madison East on Tuesday night.

With one out in the top of the first, Gabby Loveland singled, stole second and—with runners on first and third—scored when East threw the ball away on a steal attempt.

East pitcher Anna Dolphin did not allow a run after that.

The Purgolders tied the game with a run in their half of the first and scored the winning runs in the sixth on four hits.

“It was a very even game,” Craig coach Dan Bayreuther said. “East just made a few more plays than we did.”

Craig pitcher Jenna Brandt held the Purgolders down until the sixth.

“She really battled,” Bayreuther said.

The Cougars, 8-7 in the Big Eight and 9-9 overall, will host West at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
