Illinois man dies in Sunday morning car crash in the town of Avon

Town of Avon—One person died and another was injured early Sunday morning after a single-vehicle accident on South Hopkins Road near Douglas Road.

A preliminary investigation by the Rock County Sheriff's Office indicated Devon Hurd was driving a 2008 Chevy Impala northbound on South Hopkins Road when the car started to slide on the gravel road. The car veered off the road and the passenger side hit trees before the car came to a stop in the middle of the road, according a news release.

Christopher Huggins, 20, was in the passenger seat, the release states.

When deputies arrived on scene at about 2:25 a.m., Huggins, of Rockford, Ill., was stuck in the vehicle and semi-conscious, according to the release.

Medics were unable to revive Huggins at the scene.

Hurd, 19, of Machesney Park, Ill., was able to exit the vehicle and was taken to Mercy Hospital and Trauma Center, Janesville, where he was treated and released, according to the release.

Both occupants were wearing seatbelts, the release states.

Beloit Fire Department and EMS, and Orfordville Fire Department and EMS responded to the crash.

Crash reconstruction specialists from the county also assisted and are investigating possible contributing factors of the crash, according to the release.
