College softball: Whitewater advances to championship series

CHICAGO—UW-Whitewater stayed alive in the NCAA Division III softball regional with two victories Saturday, which put the Warhawks into the championship series today.

The Warhawks (33-10) need to defeat Benedictine twice today to advance to the 14-team Super Regional next Friday and Saturday.

Benedictine defeated the Warhawks 4-2 on Friday and is the only remaining undefeated team in the double-elimination tournament.

The Warhawks won two elimination games Saturday. They opened with a 4-0 win over host University of Chicago, scoring four times in the bottom of the sixth inning.

The moved to today’s championship round by beating Thomas More 4-2 scoring two runs in the top of the seventh inning.

With the score tied 2-all in the game against Thomas More, Mimi Ramirez tripled to open the top of the seventh. She scored on Kelly McGrail’s fielder’s choice, and McGrail beat the throw to first.

Morgan Kritsch reached on an infield single, and McGrail scored on Paige Evangelista’s single.

In the opening win against Chicago, the Warhawks combined two hits, two walks and three errors into the decisive four-run sixth inning.

Kelynn Spoerer limited Chicago to four hits in pitching the complete-game shutout.

The game was scoreless until the sixth.

The Warhawks’ Samie Seamon opened the inning with an infield single.

Ramirez attempted to sacrifice and reached when the pitcher threw the ball away putting runners on second and third.

McGrail singled up the middle to score Seamon.

After a strikeout, Amy Ricci reached on a fielding error by the second baseman, with Ramirez scoring. Evangelista walked to load the bases.

After another strikeout, Jo Jablonski walked to force in McGrail. Chelsey Schobert then reached on a fielding error by the shortstop, which scored Ricci to complete the inning.
