JANESVILLE—The state senator representing much of Rock County has named his preference among the three Democrats running to replace him.

Sen. Tim Cullen on Wednesday announced his choice is Austin Scieszinski.

The endorsement is likely one of the more prized endorsements of the 15th Senate District race and bypasses two more experienced politicians.

Scieszinski faces Rep. Janis Ringhand of Evansville and former Assembly Speaker Mike Sheridan of Janesville in the Aug. 12 primary.

Cullen is not seeking re-election.

Cullen said in a news release that he has worked with all three of the Democratic hopefuls, and he prefers Scieszinski “because I know he will be the hardest worker and most dedicated to helping people in our area.”

Cullen added: “Our state's political system has been battered and broken by unabiding partisanship, and we can't expect change by sending the same people to Madison. It is time for a new generation of leadership in the state Legislature.”

Scieszinski ran Cullen's election campaign in 2010 and later worked as a legislative aide for Cullen. He now works as a project manager for his family's real estate investment company.

Cullen said Scieszinski is running “to fight for the average person that doesn't have a high-paid lobbyist in Madison. He is passionate about helping others, and I couldn't be more excited that he is running.”

The district comprises much of Rock County, including Janesville and parts of surrounding counties of Walworth, Green, Jefferson and Dane counties, including Whitewater.
