Rock River League: Milton, Janesville win openers
MILTON—Milton Raptors manager Doug Welch wasn't quite sure what to expect from starting pitcher Sean McCann when the Raptors opened their Rock River League season Sunday afternoon against the Madison Black Sox.
Ten strikeouts and a 6-1 victory later, the uncertainty was gone.
After the Black Sox scored their lone run in the top of the first inning, McCann settled down to pitch six innings and earn the win. At one point, he struck out five consecutive batters.
“He had decent velocity, kept the ball down and mixed speeds and kept them off balance,” Welch said of his starting pitcher.
The Raptors broke out for five runs in their first at-bat of the season with a lead-off single and a handful of walks before Dave Sagitis delivered a two-run double.
“The double turned it from a good inning into a great inning,” Welch said.
Milton is back in action when they visit the Janesville Aces at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

• Janesville 21, Farmington 3—The Aces scored 10 runs in the first two innings of their season-opening Rock River League game on their way to beating Farmington, 21-3.
David Gackstatter had four of Janesville's 16 hits, and the Aces were able to take advantage of seven Farmington errors.
“Any time you get 16 hits in seven innings, you're doing OK,” Aces manager Mike Davis said. Janesville committed just one error in the game, which bodes well as the season continues because the team hadn't had much time to practice outdoors before its first game, Davis said.
