Janesville Aces hope to rebound in 2014
The Janesville Aces hope a stronger, more committed lineup will lead to success in the Rock River League in 2014.
The Aces open their baseball season against Farmington at 1:30 p.m. today in Riverside Park.
“I’m optimistic this year, just because last year one of our big problems was player attendance,” Janesville coach Mike Davis said. “We had a mediocre year, but that didn’t bother me nearly as much as trying to get guys to games when they say they’re going to show up.”
The Aces finished fourth in the Southwest Division last year, behind Milton and the two Madison teams. This season, the RRL is split into just two divisions—the North and South.
Janesville is coming off a season where it finished with a 6-10 record.
“Last year, a lot of our innings (on the mound) were eaten up by Andy Kersten, a Janesville Parker grad, and he’ll be back,” Davis said. “I throw a little bit now and then, and I think our next most innings for returning pitchers is David Gackstatter.”
Davis also feels good about the core of his lineup heading into the season.
“The beauty of our team is a lot of the guys are at a very similar talent level,” he said. “Hitters we have coming back are Gackstatter, Brett Fredricks—both of those guys have played with us since the team started two years ago.
“Tanner Moe, he’s another infielder that’s played with us since team started. Gabe DeMarco, he played independent pro baseball in Rockford, so he’s obviously our best hitter.”
The Aces will spend the majority of the first half of their season playing at home, but spend much of the latter part of the season on the road.
