BELOIT—A 16-year-old mother awoke early Wednesday morning to find her infant girl was not breathing, the Beloit Police Department reported.

The family began CPR before police and fire department personnel arrived, but the baby was later pronounced dead at Beloit Memorial Hospital, according to a news release.

An investigation continued Wednesday into the incident. Police said the mother had fed the 3-month-old around midnight, and then both fell asleep on a couch.

The mother awoke about 4:15 a.m. and called 911. Police and fire units were dispatched to the home in the 1500 block of St. Lawrence Avenue.

Police Capt. Dan Risse said he hoped an autopsy could be scheduled soon to determine the cause of death.
