Dorothy Hershfield-Reinardy, Kewaunee, WI (1911-2014)

Dorothy (Steingraeber) Hershfield-Reinardy was born June 6, 1911, in Kewaunee, WI, the daughter of Henry G. and Emelia (Bangert) Steingraeber. She graduated from Holy Rosary School in 1925, and Kewaunee High School in 1929. She attended secretarial school in Milwaukee. She spent all of her working years employed by Kewaunee County in various departments, ending up in the Kewaunee County Highway Department. She was one of only two women who served in all the county offices. She retired in 1976. On Sept. 27, 1951, she married Clifford A. Hershfield. Dorothy and Cliff moved in 1976, into her family home which her father had built and in which she had been born. Cliff died Dec. 24, 1980. On June 5, 1982, she married her widowed brother-in-law, Dr. Arthur L. Reinardy, and continued living in the family home. Dr. Art died on Nov. 23, 2008.

Dorothy belonged to Holy Rosary Parish in Kewaunee, all of her life, where she was a member of St. Anne’s Society and the Holy Rosary Society. Additionally, she was a member of The Catholic Order of Foresters, The Serra Club of Green Bay, and the Kewaunee County Historical Society. Dorothy loved to travel, explore and experience new sights. She saw much of the world firsthand. She loved gardening and cooking and was famous for her raspberry torte. She enjoyed crafts, especially ceramic work and hat making. She was especially generous to philanthropic causes.

Besides her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Joseph, and his wife, Elaine; her sisters, Anna Mae Steingraeber and Helen Reinardy; her step-son, Robert Hershfield; her niece, Joanne Reinardy; and her step-grandchild, Tim Shea. She is survived by her step-daughter, Mary Ann Hershfield; 10 nieces and nephews: Dr. Michael (Virginia) Reinardy, William Reinardy (Joanne, deceased), John (Adrienne) Reinardy, Dorothy (William) Shea, Richard (Donna) Reinardy, Mary (Gordon) Hoagland, Dr. Paul (Jane) Steingraeber, Rev. John Steingraeber CSSR, David (Carol) Steingraeber, Mark (Carol) Steingraeber; and numerous other relatives and friends.

Friends may call after 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 23, at HOLY ROSARY CHURCH, Kewaunee. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. by Fr. William Swichtenberg. Burial will be in Holy Rosary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Dorothy’s name to Kewaunee Holy Rosary Parish or the Kewaunee Catholic Order of Foresters.

A great big thank you to all who helped Dorothy and her family in her last few years, including but not limited to Emerald Shores Assisted Living, Dr. Thomas Zenner, The Kewaunee County Center for the Aging, Joe & Julie Kotyza, Bill and Mary Kay Shaw, and Patti & Rick Lemmens. Thanks also to the staff of Unity Hospice and Bellin Health Care Systems for their assistance in Dorothy’s last days.
