Raymond Julius Zahn, age 91, of Janesville, died on Thursday, April 17, 2014, at Rock Haven Nursing Home. He was born in Footville, on Feb. 3, 1923, the son of Paul and Emma (Willing) Zahn. He was baptized and a confirmed member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church. Ray attended Footville, St. Paul’s and Janesville Schools. In October of 1942, he joined the U.S. Navy serving aboard the tanker USS Kanawha and on April 7, 1943, at Guadalcanal they were attacked by Japanese planes and were sunk. Along with other survivors, Ray later served aboard the tanker USS Pasig, and was awarded the “Asiatic Theatre Campaign Ribbon.” He completed his service stationed at the Miami Florida Naval Base, and was discharged on Nov. 30, 1945. He married Zola M. Dietrich in Miami, on Feb. 5, 1944, and she preceded him in death on Aug. 17, 2004. He owned a trucking business for 15 years, transporting milk from farms to Pet Milk Co., Borden Co., and Pure Milk Association. He owned the Eastside Shell Service Station for 15 years, and retired from Dana Corp’s axle division in 1986. Ray was a member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he was active in Bible Class and Adult Fellowship, the Devins Teehan American Legion Post of Footville, the VFW Post 1621 of Janesville, and the Kiwanis Blackhawk Golden K Club. He took it upon himself, with the help of the school administration, and donated trees for the Jefferson School’s baseball diamonds. He liked yard work, watching the Brewers and fixing small engines.

Ray is survived by his daughter, Cinda (Gregory) Halvorson of Baraboo; two grandsons, Aaron (Erin) Halvorson of Madison, and Paul (Tiffany) Halvorson of Orlando; two great-grandchildren, Ella and Benjamin; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; brother, Elmer Zahn; and two sisters, Florence Lund and Crystal Davis.

A Funeral Service will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22, 2014, at ST. PAUL’S EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH, Janesville, with Rev. Jack Fish officiating. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Tuesday from 12 until 1 p.m. at ST. PAUL’S EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH.
