JANESVILLE — Monroe Elementary School Principal Lori Burns has resigned her position as principal at the school effectively immediately.

Interim Principal Sally Pope will finish out the remainder of the year in the role and the position will be posted, Stephen Sperry, director of administrative and human services for the Janesville School District, said.

In an April 10 blog post, Burns said she resigned her position due to her current health status.

“I know that I gave it my all and that feels so good,” Burns wrote. “I am leaving Monroe School with pride in my heart. The students, staff and parents are incredible and I was so blessed that God placed me there. I never wanted my principal career to end in this way, but I believe God has different plans for me.”

Burns was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in February 2013 and hadn't worked at the school for the entire 2013-14 school year.

“I have been an educator in Janesville since 1991,” Burns wrote. “That is all I have ever known or wanted.”

Burns began her career in the Janesville School District as a 7th grade teacher at Edison Middle School before moving onto a learning support position at the school. She began in her role at Monroe Elementary at the beginning of the 2005-06 school year, Sperry said.

“She is a very pleasant person, very optimistic,” Sperry said. “She is very much respected by other principals.”

Burns is a wife and mother of three teenagers.

“We were fortunate to have her as a leader at the elementary level,” Sperry said. “There is a strong, functioning staff at Monroe that she formed.”

A decision on the school's next principal will be made with staff and parent input taken into consideration, Sperry said.

“I know the staff at Monroe will continue to do great things for the students,” Burns wrote. “They are an amazing group of educators and I am so proud of the work they do. Monroe School will be forever in my heart.  Great memories and thoughts will stay with me. I wish the school the best of everything.  I won't be a stranger.  I miss you all way too much to stay away.”
