Dr. James C. Hamilton, age 79, died peacefully after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease on Monday, April 14, 2014, at Alden Meadow Park Health Care Center surrounded by his family. Jim was born March 27, 1935, to the late Roger A. and Helen E. (Carter) Hamilton in Des Plaines, IL. In 1945, the family moved back to Clinton, when Roger took over the family business: J.A. Hamilton & Sons Department Store. Jim graduated salutatorian from Clinton High School in 1953, attended Grinnell College until 1957, and graduated from Marquette Dental School in 1961. He married Shirley Walker on Feb. 14, 1959, in Beloit. They started their family and Jim opened a dental practice in Gays Mills, WI. In 1967, they moved back to Clinton, to be closer to family when Jim worked with Dr. George until he bought the practice at the corner of Allen Street and Cross Street in Clinton. Jim practiced dentistry in Clinton, for 30 years until his retirement in 1996, when he sold the practice to Dr. Herlihey of Roscoe, IL. Jim was an active volunteer in Clinton, including a choir member, elder and deacon at First Presbyterian Church, Cub Scout & Boy Scout leadership, Town of Clinton planning board, Clinton School board member and meals on wheels volunteer.

Jim is survived by his wife, Shirley; his five children: Jan (Scott) Crowley of Elkhorn, WI, Roger (Pam) Hamilton of Maple Grove, MN, Sue (Dan) Blair of Clinton, Beth (Mark Bedford) Hamilton of New Windsor, IL, and Rob (Amy) Hamilton of Cambridge, MN; 18 grandchildren: Laura (Rami) Lajin, Megan (Brian) Wolff, Lisa (Adam) Brown, Lee (Selina) Crowley, Emily Hamilton, Sloane Smith, Thomas Hamilton, Natalie Hamilton, Christina Bedford, Will Hamilton, Joseph Hamilton, Claire Hamilton, Andrew Hamilton, Noah Hamilton, Lily Hamilton, Jemima Hamilton, Daisy Hamilton and Gideon Hamilton; eight great- grandchildren; his brother, Keith Hamilton; and his sister, Ellen (Mitzi) George. He was preceded in death by his parents.

The family would like to thank Jim’s caregiver, Leslie, Alden Meadow Park and Mercy Hospice for their personal and compassionate care.

Jim’s Memorial Service will be at 12 Noon on Tuesday, April 22, 2014, in the FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 312 Church Street, Clinton, with Rev. Courtney Ellis officiating. Friends will be received on Tuesday at the CHURCH from 10 a.m. until the time of service. The family will proceed to a private gravesite service at the Clinton Cemetery, to be followed by a community lunch at CHURCH to share memories of Jim.
