Update: Devasting Whitewater barn fire remains under investigation
WHITEWATER—A barn fire near Whitewater early Thursday morning that killed more than 200 animals remains under investigation, according to a news release from the Whitewater Fire Department.
Firefighters responded to the blaze at W5856 Tri-County Line Road near Whitewater at 6:31 a.m. Thursday. Although the department initially requested aid from area departments, that call was cancelled when firefighters on the scene found that the barn had already collapsed and couldn't be saved.
The Fort Atkinson Fire Department did respond to the fire.
Fire crews used approximately 20,000 gallons of water to extinguish the fire and prevent it from spreading to other areas, the release noted.
Approximately 250 animals, including goats, sheep, lambs, birds and dogs perished in the fire.
No injuries to firefighters or citizens were reported.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the fire, but won't comment on the investigation's status at this time, Whitewater Fire Chief Don Gregoire said in the release.
