AUGUSTA, Ga.—Steve Stricker is struggling a bit with his driver and has hit only 16 of 28 of Augusta National’s wide fairways through two rounds of the Masters Tournament.

But he fought his way to a 1-over-par 73 in the second round Friday and was at 1-over 145 for the tournament, eight shots behind leader Bubba Watson but just five off of second place.

“It was a bit of a struggle,” Stricker said. “It’s just a tough place and I’m struggling with a few things, which makes it a little tougher. But I hung in there nicely, made some nice saves and plodded my way along.

“Hopefully, I can start driving it a little better. I’m struggling with it. A little bit of that, and then a few iron shots get away here and there, too. It puts you in a tough spot.”

Stricker birdied No. 1 but then made three consecutive bogeys on Nos. 5-7. He played the last 11 holes in 1-under.

“All in all, I’m right in there,” he said. “I need a good weekend. I need a good round tomorrow. I’m going to go to the range and see if I can’t catch on to a few things.”
