Zac Brandenburg and Kyle Popovich dug deep to seal a season-opening victory for the Janesville Parker boys tennis team.

The Vikings No. 2 doubles team rallied from losing a first-set tiebreaker, winning the second 7-6 (5) and 6-3, and Parker topped Madison La Follette 4-3 in Big Eight play.

“The No. 2 guys did a great job coming back in that second set and winning the tiebreak,” Parker coach Mike Fuhrmann said. “The third set they took control early and held on. I was really happy to see their resilience, especially because it was Kyle’s first varsity match.”

Parker also got straight-sets doubles victories from Nick Garey and Sam Buck and from Sam Amundson and David Howell.

Most of the Vikings’ experienced varsity players will play doubles this season. Garey, Buck, Brandenburg and Popovich are all seniors; Amundson and Howell are juniors.

“We have a lot of our leadership and our seniors in doubles, and they set the tone (Thursday),” Fuhrmann said. “They’re definitely going to be our leaders. We’re going to look to those guys to bring along the guys on the singles side of things.”

Jordan Peyer, the lone senior singles player, won his match, 6-3, 6-3.

The Vikings started junior Trey Hauger at No. 1 singles, with sophomore Josh Harmata and foreign-exchange student Matt Stamm at Nos. 3 and 4, respectively.

“The biggest thing we’ve got to understand is early in the year is we’ve got a lot of guys learning,” Fuhrmann said. “Varsity through JV, we’re inexperienced, but we need to keep getting better and don’t settle.”

Parker hosts a quad featuring Beloit, Badger and Fort Atkinson on Monday.
