JANESVILLE—More than 60 people applied for the post of Rock County administrator.

Of those, 23 met the criteria, and six were chosen as semi-finalists.

On Tuesday, the Rock County Board Staff Committee received an update on the search to replace County Administrator Craig Knutson, who announced in January that he will retire Aug. 2.

Knutson has been the administrator for 30 years. Before that, he served as the assistant to the county administrator for five years.

County Board Chairman Russ Podzilni reviewed the applications along with board Vice Chairwoman Sandy Kraft, Human Resources Director Dave O'Connell and Walworth County Administrator David Bretl.

Officials wanted Bretl's professional input, Kraft said.

The plan calls for the six semi-finalists to be interviewed April 28 by the staff committee in a closed session meeting. The finalists will be chosen on that date.

During the second week of May, the committee would host an open house for county board members, public officials from communities in the county and local residents to meet the two or three finalists.

The schedule is tentative because newly elected county board members won't be sworn in until April 15, said O'Connell. At that time, the board chair and vice chair also will be elected, and committee assignments might change.

The names of the semi-finalists are not being released.
