Janesville Craig's softball team pulled off a big early-season upset Wednesday afternoon.

Sydney Cramer doubled in Al Hughes in the top of the seventh inning for the game's only run as the Cougars shocked Madison La Follette and star pitcher Nicole Newman, 1-0, in a Big Eight Conference thriller.

Craig (2-2, 1-1) struck out 14 times against Newman, a Drake University recruit, but pushed across a run in the seventh after being no-hit the first six innings.

“I think Newman is throwing even harder and better than last year,” Craig coach Dan Bayreuther said. “She had 17 strikeouts yesterday (Tuesday) and got us 14 times today.

“But I'm really proud of our girls. They kept battling and found a way to get it done.”

Hughes singled to start the seventh and advanced to second on Gabby Loveland's sacrifice bunt. Cramer fouled off two pitches before doubling over the third baseman's head for the game-winner.

La Follette had runners on second and third with no outs in the fourth but failed to score. Craig's Olivia Bolton threw a runner out at home to end the threat.

Cougar freshman pitcher Jenna Brandt picked up the win, allowing six hits and no walks.

Craig hosts crosstown rival Janesville at 4:30 p.m. today at the Janesville Youth Sports Complex.
