Alex Faust threw a no-hitter, and his Janesville Craig teammates pounded out 12 hits and 12 runs as the Cougars shut out host Madison East 12-0 in a Big Eight Conference baseball opener Tuesday afternoon.

Faust struck out seven and walked just two while no-hitting the Purgolders in the five-inning contest.

“Faust really pounded the zone,” Craig coach Vic Herbst said. “He only threw 59 pitches. He had great defense behind him. To throw a no-hitter in our league is a tough task.”

Craig gave Faust an eight-run lead to work with by scoring four times in each of the first two innings.

Nick Blomgren led the offense. The shortstop went 3-for-3 with two doubles and six RBI.

Wyatt Olson also had two doubles in two at-bats, and Kevin Brandt also doubled.

The Cougars, 2-0 overall, are scheduled to play Madison West at 5 p.m. Thursday at Riverside Park.
