Your Views: Society can’t make excuses for people’s poor choices

I must respond to Leonard Pitts’ column in The Gazette on April 4. His column was about the “real face of poverty.” I have to disagree with Pitts’ views.

Shanesha Taylor left her kids in a hot car to apply for a job. As Pitts stated, it is no excuse. Being poor doesn’t mean she should give up her common sense or humanity for her children.

I have a hard time believing she had absolutely no one to help her with the children while she went for this job interview. Her children were 2 years old and 6 months old. If she is poor and homeless, why is she continuing to have more children? Where is the father? Come on, people, society cannot continue to make excuses for people who continually make poor choices in life.

No, I have never been poor, but I do work hard for everything I have. I am by no means rich monetarily. I do not know what it’s like to have no food on my table. However, if I were in that situation, I would certainly figure something out and I would not continue to have more children.

Sorry if I offend some people, but I truly believe everyone can make the right choices if they want to. Extenuating circumstances can be a factor, and I feel for people who are thrown into poverty unexpectedly. I believe in helping people get back on their own feet, not continually support them.
