JANESVILLE—The Rock County Sheriff's Office has received a grant that will pay expenses for deputies to take local children on fishing outings.

The Cops and Kids Foundation gave the $1,000 award to support the Rock County Cops and Bobbers fishing program.

The money will pay for fishing supplies, boat rental and related materials. In addition, the Cops and Kids Foundation will provide fishing poles, life jackets and event T-shirts.

The program's primary goal is to teach kids how to fish, according to a sheriff's office news release.

“The cops are the hosts, and volunteers from the community are encouraged to assist,” the release states. “A secondary goal is to hook kids on fishing rather than drugs and crime. Kids can interact with cops to form positive and friendly relationships as well as learn to appreciate the lakes and rivers in Rock County.”

Two Cops and Bobbers events will be held this year in Rock County. Dates have not been set.

Each event will accommodate 20 children, ages 7 and older. Parents or guardians of children who are interested should submit a letter including the child's name, age, address and phone number to Sheriff Bob Spoden, 200 E. Highway 14, Janesville WI, 53545.

This Cops and Kids Foundation grant is renewable for up to three years, but the sheriff's office must show that the program can be self-sufficient beyond that point. Therefore, individuals or businesses are invited to donate. Donors' business names will be noted on the backs of event T-shirts.
