The Janesville Parker girls soccer team battled through the elements to win its season-opening match on Friday night.

Constance Beyer scored one goal and assisted on another as the Vikings topped Racine Case, 3-1, in a nonconference road game.

“It really was a game of attrition,” first-year coach Steve Strieker said. “The weather was so bad, the girls were just trying to survive on the field.

“But the girls didn't win a game last year, so they were pretty ecstatic in coming out on top.”

Morgan Burner put Parker on top early with an assist from Beyer in the first half, but Case evened the score just before halftime.

Megan Fillion provided the eventual game-winning goal five minutes into the second half on a feed from Miranda Hopkins.

Beyer added an insurance goal 10 minutes later from Liz Armstrong.

“We're a developing program, but there's a lot of promise,” Strieker said. “We have some good athletes, and that played to our advantage tonight. For the season, our highlight will be a real balanced team of good athletes who will continue to develop their soccer skills.”

Strieker said the Vikings will be led from the back, where senior Becky Harmata is the starting goalkeeper.

Harmata is one of five seniors on the team and had four saves on Friday night.

“She's our leader; everybody looks to her,” Strieker said. “She directs a lot of our younger players around from that back position.”

The Vikings are back in action at 7 p.m. Monday night against Beloit.
