MONROE—Brodhead firefighters are among firefighters from 13 fire departments that responded to a fire early Tuesday morning at Badger State Ethanol, 820 W. 17th St., Monroe.

An employee at the ethanol plant reported the fire at 2:48 a.m. Tuesday, said Monroe Police Chief Fred Kelly.

A skeleton employee crew was cleaning and doing maintenance work during a routine plant shut down when the fire started in the ductwork, he said.

“The ethanol is not on fire, it's a big grain fire in the duct work,” Kelley said.

“It's still a working fire; just not a big flaming thing and for the most part under control,” he said.

Other fire department providing mutual aid are Juda, Monticello, New Glarus, South Wayne, Albany and Browntown plus Freeport Rural, Freeport City, Orangeville and Cedarville from Illinois.

“What caused the fire isn't known, Kelley said.

Nobody was injured. Damage isn't known yet, he said.
