Max James Merlet, 28, died Thursday, March 27, 2014, of injuries suffered in an automobile accident. He was born Aug. 1, 1985, in Beloit, WI, the son of Russell and Jan (Udell) Merlet. Max attended Beloit Turner Schools, kindergarten through high school, graduating from Turner in 2004. He completed a two year apprenticeship program for heavy equipment repair.

Max had a great mentor in his step father. They worked closely together for 10 years. He was a partner in Diesel Engine Specialist, LLC of Beloit. Max was a heavy equipment mechanic, specializing in diesel engines. His greatest love and passion was flying, and he was a instrument rated private pilot. He loved to fish, especially in Florida, with his grandfather and Uncle Scott; he was a good guitar player and enjoyed golfing. Max especially loved to snowmobile with his brother-in-law and step brothers. The mountains of Montana and Colorado, were his favorite places. Like his Dad, he was a huge Packer fan. Max was smart, sensitive, funny and had a great smile. He loved to tease his niece, nephew and mom. Max lived his entire life on the family farm in his father's house. He was much beloved.

Survivors include his mother and step father, Jan and Robert Knutson Jr.; his sister and brother-in-law and best friends, Michelle and Matthew Schwarz. He was very close to his step brothers, Zach (Sarah) Knutson and Tim (Patti) Knutson. Max is also survived by his much loved maternal grandfather, Beauford Udell; grandparents, Robert and Norma Knutson Sr.; his cherished, special niece, Sophia Schwarz; niece, Reese Knutson; and nephew, Connor Knutson; aunts: Julie Udell, Joanie (Scott) Smith, Phyllis Merlet, and Lois (Bob) Kane; uncle, Britt (Kim) Udell; cousins: Julia Jordan, Shane Potter, Shari Zenz, Karen Smith, Brad Lindaas, and Christine Pryor; and special friend, Dave Grenawalt. He was predeceased by his father in 2003, Russell Merlet; uncle, Roger Merlet; paternal grandparents, Donald and Jeanette Merlet; and maternal grandmother, Alta Udell.

God called your name so gently that only you could hear. No one heard the footsteps of the Angels drawing near.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 4, 2014, at THE DALEY MURPHY WISCH & ASSOCIATES FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORIUM, 2355 Cranston Road, Beloit, WI, with Reverend Larry Froemming officiating. Burial will be in Newark Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 until 8 p.m. Thursday at the FUNERAL HOME. A memorial will be established at a later date.
