July 26, 1939 - March 26, 2014

Darrell J. Stearns, age 74, of Edgerton, was reunited with a host of loved ones on Wednesday evening, March 26, 2014. Darrell was born on July 26, 1939, in Milwaukee, WI, son of the late Lloyd and Margaret (Murphy) Stearns, and moved with his family to a farm in rural Edgerton, as a lad. After graduating from Edgerton High School in 1957, Darrell served his country in the Army. On Feb. 20, 1963, Darrell married the love of his life, Deanna Ellis. Together they formed, arguably, the world's greatest parenting team and had three children: Mike, David and Jacki, whom they loved equally and dearly. Darrell spent most of his working years in the construction business, initially operating heavy equipment for R.T. Fox before partnering with Jerry Fox to run their own operation. Darrell's spirit of independence and adventure led him to running his own construction and, later, auto salvage businesses during the 1980s. Most recently, Darrell worked for Speedway Construction in Madison, retiring in 2000. Darrell's fantastic sense of humor entertained all who had an opportunity to spend time with the man. It was present through the end. Equally as impressive as Darrell's sense of humor was his generosity, smarts (he knew a little something about everything) and open-minded way of thinking. Darrell was a huge sports nut, prone to turning games off when he became frustrated - unfortunately, this trait caused him to miss a heck of a come back by our Packers verses the Cowboys this past season.

While Darrell's life was full of high points, there were many dark days. He lost his seventeen year-old son, David, to a automobile accident in 1983; he lost a close nephew, Steve, to a worksite accident in 1998; he lost the light of his life, Deanna, to cancer in 2005, and then just three years later he lost his baby, Jacki, to cancer in 2008. Through all the tragedy the man forged ahead, sharing his humor and generosity with those God left him behind to comfort. Darrell's strength in coping with adversity is an inspiration to his remaining family.

Darrell is survived by his son, Mike (Tammy) and his two cherished grandchildren, Allison and Kellen. He is also survived by brothers: Lawrence, Milt (Diane), Robert (Carolynn), Wayne (Vee); and brother-in-law, Dick Ellis; as well as several nieces and nephews. Darrell was preceded in death by his parents, wife, son, daughter and brother, Gordon.

In honor of Darrell's wishes the funeral services will be small and simple. Funeral services will be held for family and friends at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 31, 2014, at the EHLERT FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION SERVICES, US HWY 51 N, Edgerton, with the Rev. James M. Johnson officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery Edgerton. An informal gathering will be held on Monday, March 31, at the FUNERAL HOME from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.
