United Way Blackhawk Region hits 96.4 percent of $2.8 million goal
JANESVILLE—United Way Blackhawk Region is projecting it will raise more than $2.7 million toward its $2.8 million 2013 campaign goal.
Campaign Chairman Tom Spilde made the announcement Wednesday morning during the United Way annual meeting and recognition event attended by 200 people at the Pontiac Convention Center.
As of Wednesday, about $2.5 million was in the office, President Steve Kinkade said.
“When all is said and done, the projected number is probably going to be $2.7 million and something,” Kinkade said.
“The goal is not going to be attained,” he said.
“As we analyze what's in, what's out, there's not enough accounts out to reach the $2.8 million figure,” Kinkade said.
Cutbacks won't be necessary.
“Everyone should be fine,” Kinkade said, referring to United Way's 102 programs and 42 partner agencies.
The shortfall of nearly $100,000 will be made up from the reduced overhead realized by consolidating the Stateline and North Rock County United Ways into the Blackhawk Region.
“We were under budget, so those excess dollars—more than $100,000—will allow us to fund all the services that we planned to fund in November,” Kinkade said.
United Way is waiting for hundreds of thousands of dollars to come in, he said.
The campaign at the Janesville School District, one of United Way's largest employee campaigns, is taking place now. Nineteen national accounts, such as Chrysler, are being tracked.
United Way projects total dollars raised will be $2,700,286—96.4 percent of goal—when all campaign results get reported.
The fragile economy and the uncertainties it caused in people contributed to the shortfall, Kinkade said.
“Most employers are still cautious about the future. The economy still has not healed itself to the pre-2008 levels, and many employers are looking at how to reduce costs,” he said.
This was the first fundraising campaign by the Blackhawk Region since unifying Stateline and North Rock County United Ways in 2012. Work on allocations for 2015 will begin in the fall and will continue on an annual cycle.
Kinkade said he considers the 2013 campaign a success.
“To raise $2.7 million is a great accomplishment in the current economic environment,” he said.
Lynn Gardinier of Baker Tilly Virchow Krause accounting firm is the new 2014 board chairwoman. She replaces outgoing board chairman Dan Piche of ABC Supply.
