Deputy sheriff's group fundraising through telemarketers

The Walworth County Deputy Sheriff's Association wants to be clear: That phone call you may get asking for a donation for the organization doesn't come from a deputy sheriff—it comes from a telemarketer.

The deputy sheriff's association, a labor organization, is beginning its annual telemarketing fundraising campaign. The proceeds go to charities, including the Holiday Toys for Kids program, School Back Pack Program, COPS Kids camp, an annual Scholarship Award Program, donations to local schools and other community causes. 

But deputy sheriffs don't man the phones to solicit the funds. The association has contracted with Professional Marketing, Inc. for the campaign. 

Over the years, however, people have called the Walworth County Sheriff's Office, saying they felt misled because they thought sheriff's deputies were asking for the donations.

“In an effort to clarify this activity the Walworth County Deputy Sheriff's Association would like to make it clear that when you receive a fundraising call you are speaking with a representative of the marketing firm, not a deputy sheriff,” stated a press release from theWalworth County Deputy Sheriff's Association.  “The association would also like to be clear that the donation you are making is going to the Walworth County Deputy Sheriff's Association and is not a donation to the Walworth County Sheriff's Office.”

The release noted the deputy sheriff's association was grateful for the donations they've received from the community, and appreciated the support for its charity donations.
