Your Views: Republicans must wake up rather than turn back clock

After suffering a substantial defeat on almost every level in 2012, the GOP has decided that rather than look into its own soul and determine how to adjust its old-fashioned views to a changing nation, Republicans will instead try to suppress the views of the very people they fear and buy themselves elections.

This is done in two ways. First, give massive tax breaks and subsidies to corporations and the top 1 percent of the population. This largesse is then used to support candidates who will try to stop the clock and turn the nation back to the past.

The second tactic is to make it as difficult as possible for those they deem unworthy to cast their ballots for the candidates of their choice, i.e., voter suppression.

These methods may buy them some time, but in the end, the Republican Party must wake up and accept the fact that the “angry old white guy” vote will just simply not be enough to carry Republicans to an electoral majority in the future.

In the last election, regardless of the billions of dollars spent by the 1 percent, the Republican Party lost the women’s vote, the black vote, Hispanic vote and youth vote. Republicans also lost 40 percent of the white vote. They will need to accept the fact that the nation is changing or risk becoming extinct. No amount of money or voter suppression will stop this; only delay it.
