ELKHORN — With 26 years of service in Walworth County law enforcement, Undersheriff Kurt Picknell wants to be sheriff.

In a news release, Picknell announced Thursday he is running for the position after Sheriff David Graves announced last week he plans to retire. Graves has a 42-year law enforcement career, including 14 years as sheriff.

Picknell has served as undersheriff for 14 years.

Graves recommends Picknell for the position.

"Serving in Walworth County law enforcement for the past 26 years has been an honor and responsibility that I have taken very seriously," Picknell said in a news release.

Picknell has worked in law enforcement since 1987 and received various awards for his work, according to the release.

Picknell has a Bachelor of Arts degree and Masters of Business Administration from Concordia University. He also attended the Center for Public Safety School of Police Staff and Command at Northwestern University and the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy.

"I have deliberately prepared myself for and continue my dedication to the citizens of Walworth County. I look forward to serving as your next Sheriff," Picknell said in the release.
