MADISON—Dane County authorities have yet to charge a Janesville man named as a suspect in the Feb. 23 death of Cheryl Gilberg, and they're still looking for a revolver that might have played a part in the crime.

The Dane County Sheriff's Office announced this morning that 25 deputies would be searching on foot along Highway 14 between Mazomanie, where Gilberg lived, and Middleton.

Authorities say Phillip A. Byrd, 39, is their prime suspect. He has been held in the Rock County Jail since Feb. 24 on unrelated charges

The searchers today are looking for “a number of items, including the Charter Arms Pink Lady .38-caliber revolver missing from Cheryl's home,” according to the news release.

The sheriff's office reports receiving many offers of help, but only sworn officers will be allowed to search because of “the sensitive nature of the evidence being sought.”

Anyone with information in the case is asked to call the Dane County tip line, 608-284-6900.
