Warhawk women advance to Division III's Elite Eight

UW-Whitewater's women's basketball team is one win away from a second straight trip to the Final Four.

Mary Merg scored 23 points and the Warhawks busted out for 45 points in the second half in pulling away for a 69-57 win over UW-Oshkosh in an NCAA Division III Sweet 16 game.

Whitewater (24-4) plays DePauw (30-1) in an Elite Eight game at 6 p.m. today.

The Warhawks led by four at halftime against WIAC rival Oshkosh but pushed the lead to double digits early in the second half.

Merg made three of Whitewater's seven 3-point baskets, while the Warhawks put the game away thanks to an impressive 22-for-28 performance at the free-throw line.

Brodhead High graduate Kristen Ruchti led the Warhawks with eight rebounds and finished with 12 points. Reilly Stewart added 11 points for Whitewater.
