The upcoming governor’s race brings to mind a fable about a group of scholars whose quest it was to condense all the wisdom of the world into one sentence. When they finally declared success, the resulting sentence was “There ain’t no free lunch!”

Unfortunately, too many people have either failed to get the message or have chosen not to believe it. Scott Walker seems to capitalize on that denial and shouts, “Lower taxes for everyone!”

Walker keeps repeating that until a majority of voters hear, “Free lunches for everyone!” And that promise is pretty hard to campaign against. Voters are led to believe that lowering taxes is the answer to all their problems. Everyone will be wealthy.

So the voter saves $78 in taxes. He smiles and goes to sleep. When he wakes up, things have changed.

“Why haven’t the potholes been fixed?” he asks. “Why aren’t our kids being educated?” “Where am I going, and why am I in this handbasket?”

Ponder that.
