Dorothy Lueder Schauer, age 97, peacefully entered eternal life at home, surrounded by her family on the snowy winter evening of March 1, 2014. Daughter of the late Arthur R. Sr. and Cora L. Schauer, She was born October 23, 1916 and raised in Janesville, WI. She went on to graduate nursing school from Rockford Hospital in 1938, and served proudly in the Army Nurse Corp. (ANC WWII). Following her years of travel and working as a nurse, she became a Medical Records Librarian at St. Luke’s Hospital in Milwaukee, WI, where she would stay until retirement.

Dorothy held a zest for life. She was an accomplished traveler, making her way from the Great Wall of China to the pyramids of Egypt, even riding on a camel! She loved chocolate, quilting, growing flowers, bird feeders and storytelling. Also a talented seamstress, she created scarves, blankets and even homemade Halloween costumes for her grandchildren. Dorothy also had a passion for reading, often devouring books in a day & sharing a special bond with her grandson over the Harry Potter series. She loved and respected history and was a proud member of The Statue of Liberty Ellis Island Foundation and the WWII Museum. A woman of strong faith, she was a lifelong member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Janesville. Dorothy was a wise and kind soul, who was fiercely independent, and a nurturing grandmother.

Dorothy lives on in the hearts of her son, Phillip (Jayne) Schauer, and grandchildren Hannah & Caleb Schauer; nephews and nieces James (Joan) Schauer, Jane (Jeff) Bair, Donna Schauer, John Schauer all of Janesville, Thomas (Mary) Schauer of Cleveland, OH, Joan (Susie) Quaerna of Towson, MD, and other nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and dear friends Sara Stelske and Sadie Will of Milwaukee, WI. Dorothy was preceded in death by her brothers, Victor and Arthur Schauer Jr., and her sisters-in-law, Helen Schauer and Mabel Schauer.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, March 14 at 5 pm, at ALL FAITHS FUNERAL HOME, 1618 E. Racine St, Janesville. A visitation will be held from 4 pm until the time of service.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Dorothy’s memory may be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Scholarship Fund or Heifer International.
