Brodhead has no trouble with Marshall
BRODHEAD--Carly Mohns and Rachel Heller made sure their last game in the Brodhead gymnasium was a memorable one.
The seniors combined for 33 points in leading Brodhead to a convincing 66-45 win over Marshall in a WIAA Division 3 regional final game.
Second-ranked Brodhead (24-0), which won its fourth straight regional title, plays Whitewater in a sectional semifinal game Thursday night at Janesville Parker. The Cardinals beat the Whippets in overtime in the only regular-season meeting between the Rock Valley Conference rivals.
Fifth-ranked Marshall, which came in with only one loss, had no answer for Brodhead’s offensive firepower.
Mohns, a University of Iowa recruit, finished with a game-high 20 points and 21 rebounds. Heller had 10 of her 13 points in the first half as Brodhead raced out to a 33-16 halftime lead. Sophomore Kylie Moe added 18 points for Brodhead.
“Our seniors stepped up big tonight,” Brodhead coach Brad Pickett said. “Rachel, Carly, Meg (Duffield) gave a great effort.
“This is just a special group of kids, and hopefully we can continue.”
Brodhead set the tone immediately. Mohns and Heller had six points each in the second quarter as Brodhead’s lead quickly went from five to 13. Moe capped off a 10-0 Brodhead run with a basket underneath to push the lead to 27-14 with 3:19 left in the half. Marshall would get no closer than 13 the rest of the way.
Mohns had her way inside. The dominant 6-foot-1 post player had eight points in the opening half and 11 rebounds.
“Carly’s been making an impact for four years, and tonight was no different,” Pickett said. “So it was nothing new. We’ve seen that time and time again from her.”
Brodhead now sets its sights on Whitewater. The Whippets rolled past Lakeside Lutheran on Saturday night and took the Cardinals to overtime in Brodhead in the first meeting.
Pickett knows his team will have its hands full.
“We’re going to see a very good team on Thursday night, but I also think we’re a pretty good team, too,” Pickett said. “It should be a great atmosphere with two very good teams playing.
“We’re one step closer to our goal, and Thursday we have a chance to take the next step.”
