Doris Pearl Joranlien, Brodhead (1929 - 2014)

Doris Pearl Joranlien, age 84, of Brodhead, passed away on Wednesday, March 5, 2014, at Select Specialty Hospital, Madison, WI. She was born on September 8, 1929 in South Beloit, IL, the daughter of Everett and Carrie (Burger) Fowler. She married Selmer T. Joranlien on February 24, 1951 at West Luther Valley Church (now Bethany Lutheran) rural Brodhead. He passed away on December 18, 1998. Doris and Selmer farmed in Avon and Spring Valley townships, Rock County, from the time of their marriage until 1970. Subsequently, she worked in the bakery at Swiss Colony, Monroe, WI, retiring after more than twenty years of dedicated service. Doris and Selmer enjoyed road trips out west and trips to Las Vegas. They especially enjoyed spending time at their trailer in Lynxville along the Mississippi River, where they fished and socialized with friends in their retirement camp. Doris also enjoyed cooking and making lefse and krumkakke during the holidays for family and friends. Her skills as a master crocheter are seen throughout her house and in the homes of family, friends and acquaintances.
Doris is survived by three sons: Alan (partner Joe) of Madison, Henry (Brigitte) of Williamsburg, VA, Thomas, Brodhead; a daughter, Janice (Douglas) Knight, Brodhead; six grandchildren: Amber (Robert) Harlow, Natasha (Ernest) Langston, Jessica Owens, Alex Joranlien, Greg (Pamela) Knight, Carmen (Brian) Schuweiler; five great-grandchildren: Robert Jr., C. J. and Jeffrey Harlow, Abigail Langston and Aiden Knight; one great-great-grandchild, Cayden Langston; a sister-in-law, Mary Fowler; and special friends, Kay Stacey, Mary Hafen, and the late Gloria Schils. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband; and her three brothers: Gerton, Clayton and Robert.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 8, 2013, at the BETHLEHEM LUTHERAN CHURCH, Brodhead, with Pastor Peder Johanson officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Brodhead. Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m., Friday, at the D.L. NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, BRODHEAD, WI, and on Saturday from 10 a.m. until time of services at the church.
