Merlin Drake, 84, of Clinton, WI, passed away Monday, Feb. 17, 2014, in Wisconsin’s Veterans Home, King, WI, surrounded by his loving family. He was born Aug. 13, 1929, in Vernon County, WI, the son of Alvin and Charlotte (Wood) Drake. Merlin was a 1947 graduate of Readstown High School, Readstown, WI. He was a Korean War veteran serving in the United States Air Force as a Staff Sergeant. Merlin married Barbara Chitwood on July 24, 1951, in the Church of Christ, Soldiers Grove, WI. Merlin was formerly employed by Beloit Corporation for 30 years, retiring in 1991. He was a member of the Quarter Century Club. Merlin enjoyed living in Yuma, AZ, for eight years and recently moved back to Clinton, WI. He loved cutting wood, wood working, watching the Green Bay Packers, and spending time with his family. One of Merlin’s greatest joys was playing with his great-grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Barbara Drake of Clinton, WI; four children: Judith Sayre of Iowa City, IA, Jon (Robin) Drake of Clinton, Joy (Scott) Perkins of Clinton, and Jamison (Donna) Drake of Dallas, TX; grandchildren: James (Tara) Sayre, Jessica (Jon) Folk, Jennifer Drake, Julia Drake, Jaclyn Drake, Christopher Perkins, Jared Drake, Rachel Drake, Tyler Nickel, Joel Nickel, Olivia Nickel, and Christina Stedard; great-grandchildren: James, Devan, Faith, Bella, Rori, and Adalyn; two sisters, Alberta (Bernard) Clemants of Westby, WI, and Ruth (Marc) Hopkins of Stoughton, WI. He was predeceased by his parents and three sisters.
A Memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, March 3, 2014, at CENTRAL CHRISTIAN CHURCH, 2460 Milwaukee Rd. Beloit, WI, with Pastor David Meding officiating. Visitation will be from 12 p.m. until the time of service Monday at the CHURCH. DALEY MURPHY WISCH & ASSOCIATES FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORIUM, 2355 Cranston Rd. Beloit, WI assisted the family with the arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in Merlin's name to Beloit Regional Hospice or Agrace HospiceCare.
