MADISON—The state Department of Public Instruction is seeking sponsors for the Summer Food Service Program, which provides free meals to low-income children during the summer.

Last year, 187 program sponsors provided 2.5 million free meals during the summer months. Sponsors operated 759 sites throughout the state in 2013.

Local school districts are the most common sponsor for the program, which they often combine with summer school sessions.

For 2014, sponsors may be any of the followings: public or private non-profit schools; public or private nonprofit residential camps; local, municipal, country tribal or state governments; public or private nonprofit colleges or universities; Upward Bound programs; libraries; or private nonprofit organizations.

All potential sponsors must complete an online application at www.wisummerfood.org.

For more information, call Amy Kolano at (608) 266-7124 or go online to www.wisummerfood.org or www.fns.usda.gov/sfsp/summer-food-service-program-sfsp.
