Town of Linn farm chosen for 2016 statewide ag event
LINN TOWNSHIP — Even though it's about two and a half years away, a Walworth County site has been chosen for the 2016 Wisconsin Farm Technology Days.
The massive event will be held July 19 through July 21, 2016, at the Steve Snudden Farm in the town of Linn.
Wisconsin Farm Technology Days features about 600 exhibitors displaying agricultural machinery, equipment, products and services. It also includes educational exhibits, machine demonstrations and agricultural experts available to answer questions.
The event will allow the county to showcase its agricultural products, said Peg Reedy, agricultural agent for the Walworth County University of Wisconsin-Extension. Those products include 103,000 acres of corn, 12,000 acres of corn silage, 46,800 acres of soybeans and 10,700 acres of alfalfa.
"Walworth County has never held Farm Technology Days before. It's a good opportunity for us to share the agricultural technology that is available in Walworth County…,” Reedy said. “Rock County has hosted it three times. The board of directors asked us to host the event even before I applied.”
A potential host farmer must be willing to dedicate 45 acres of their property for demonstrations and educational programs, Reedy said.
“We have to have a farmer that's willing to have between 30,000 to 60,000 people on his farm during the span of three days,” Reedy said. “The farm has to leave a good impression on visitors. It's got to represent Walworth County well, and I think Steve Snudden's farm does that. It's a well-run operation.”
The farm, 815 N. Zenda Road, includes about 645 acres and employs about 18 workers.
Wisconsin Farm Technology Days is held in a different county each year. This year, the event will be held Aug. 12-14 on the Feltz Farm in Stevens Point.
“Wisconsin is unique. I think Illinois and Iowa host their farm technology days event at the same location each year," Reedy said. "Wisconsin moves theirs to a different county. Logistically, I think ours is a little bit more difficult to organize.”
She continued, "We have to organize the educational displaysWe have to get a youth tent set up and a conservation tent set up. We have to have an exhibit area. We have to prepare for parking and food vendors. We have to have a grounds committee. We have to run utilities, and we have to have electricity and Wi-Fi Internet access."
