JANESVILLE--Speeding with 20 pounds of pot in the car turned out to be a bad choice for a Madison man, according to the Wisconsin State Patrol.

At 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, Patrol Trooper Dustin Johanning stopped Derrick D. Maebane, 44, of 545 Moorland Road, Madison, for speeding on Interstate 90/39 south of Janesville, according to a news release from the State Patrol.

When the trooper spoke with the driver, he smelled marijuana, according to the release.

A search revealed 20 pounds of marijuana and $886, the State Patrol reported.

That estimate later was lowered to 15 pounds, according to the criminal complaint.

Maebane was arrested on charges of possession of marijuana with intent to deliver as a repeat offender. He was also ticketed for open intoxicants and speeding.

Maebane will make his first appearance in Rock County Court today.
