JANESVILLE—A Madison man accused of having 15 pounds of marijuana in his car when pulled over for speeding on the Interstate was ordered held in the Rock County Jail on a $15,000 cash bond.

Derrick D. Maebane, 44, of 545 Moorland Road, Madison, appeared in Rock County Court on Thursday afternoon by video from the jail.

Maebane was arrested at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday on Interstate 90/39 in the town of La Prairie on a charge of possession with marijuana with intent to deliver as second or subsequent offense.

Maebane was traveling north at 79 mph when he was stopped by Wisconsin State Trooper Dustin Johanning, according to the criminal complaint.

As soon as Maebane rolled down his window, the trooper smelled a “strong odor” of marijuana and the slight odor of intoxicants on Maebane's breath, according to the complaint.

As Maebane stepped from the car for field sobriety tests, the trooper saw "a green leafy substance" on the defendant's shirt that he believed to be marijuana, according to the complaint.

A search of the vehicle turned up a marijuana cigarette butt in the ashtray, $866 in the center console and a small flask on the driver's side floor.

In the trunk, the trooper found a garbage bag containing 15 gallon-size plastic bags each containing about a pound of marijuana, according to the complaint.

In a news release issued earlier Thursday, the state patrol had estimated the marijuana totaled 20 pounds.

If convicted, Maebane could face a fine of up to $25,000 and a prison term of up to 12 years and six months.
