MILTON—The city of Milton is extending its water pipe freeze advisory until the end of March, city officials announced.

In a release, the city is recommending residents and property owners run a pencil-thick stream of water until March 31 to limit the chance of residential lateral water pipes freezing. The advisory went into effect last week.

Area municipalities have announced pipe-freeze advisories amid weeks of extreme cold weather, which has caused the ground to freeze to record depths, icing and straining underground water pipes.

Officials say running water keeps pipes at a higher temperature, which lessens the risk of pipes freezing.

The city estimates the potential for frozen pipes will not go away until the ground begins to thaw, which could be another five or six weeks.

The city plans to establish and provide a water credit to customers to offset the cost of extra water usage, the city says.
