John C. Dowell, 58, of Eau Claire, died peacefully after a long and courageous battle with Huntington’s disease on Feb. 13, 2014, at Lifestyles Adult Family Home in Menomonie, surrounded by his family. John, son of Mavis (Jensen) and John Dowell, was born on Sept. 11, 1955, in Janesville, WI. John attended UWEC where he played football for four years for the Blugolds. He married his wife, Vicki, on Aug. 18, 1982, in Eau Claire. John was a partner in MSC, Inc. and Resource Management, Debt Management Companies, until the onset of Huntington’s disease.

John was an athlete at heart and grew up on a baseball and football field. After college football, he played softball and racquetball. He cherished the friendships he made throughout his life in these communities. He transferred his passion for athletics into coaching youth sports. He taught them the value of teamwork and always reinforced the idea that with hard work came success. He took great pride when his players began to realize their potential. However, he took most pride in watching his own sons play, grow, and apply the life lessons they learned in the process. John was a family man and loved spending time with his wife and sons. As the boys grew older, John spent endless time at the cottage on Lake Holcombe. Fishing and just being on the lake with family, friends, and his beloved dogs, Tank and Darby, were his favorite pastimes.

John is survived by his wife, Vicki; two sons, Luke and Jake (Carly); two sisters, Denise (Rick) Larson and Connie (Steve) Tatge; four brothers: Dennis, David, Brett and Bryce Brecklin; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. John was preceded in death by his father, mother, and stepfather, Henry Brecklin.

John’s family wants to thank Matt and Cindy Berry for their loving care of John to the end and also want to thank the Mayo Hospice team for their incredible support.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to Huntington’s Disease Society of America (HDSA) in John’s name.
