The Janesville Craig boys basketball team had No. 7 Madison Memorial on the ropes on the road on Saturday night.

The Cougars hung tough with the Big Eight leaders, but the Spartans pulled away down the stretch for a 72-65 lead.

“The kids played with them all the way through,” Craig assistant coach Bob Richards said. “Their spirits are up, because they know they can play with them.”

Craig hit 11 3-pointers in the game, including a flurry of them in the first half when it built a seven-point halftime lead.

The Cougars—who got 22 points from senior guard Jerry Ngobi and 17 from senior wing Mike Murphy—still led by two after the third, but Travis Lindquist and Memorial took over from there.

Lindquist scored 13 of his game-high 23 points over the final eight minutes to lead the Spartans’ rally.

Craig fell to 9-8 in the Big Eight. It travels to Stoughton for a nonconference game on Monday night before hosting Middleton to close out the conference season on Saturday.
