Slatter, Foster lift Craig to road win
When the Janesville Craig High girls basketball team needed some long-range marksmanship late in its game at Sun Prairie on Thursday night, two unlikely sources came through.
Aleyha Slatter and Nikki Foster hit consecutive 3-pointers to put the Cougars in front for good as Craig overcame a game-long deficit to defeat the Cardinals 49-44.
Sun Prairie led after one quarter, 9-4, and led for most of the game.
“It was one of those grind-’em-out games,” Craig coach Kerry Storbakken said.
The Cougars took their first lead at 24-23, but the Cardinals had a 34-31 advantage going into the fourth quarter.
With just more than three minutes to go, Slatter drilled a 3-pointer from the corner to tie the game at 42. After a defensive stop, Foster’s 3 put Craig ahead for good.
Sophomore Anne Schumacher contributed two critical free throws, and Al Hughes sealed the victory with two more.
“The girls kept after it,” Storbakken said. “Those back-to-back 3s were huge. And they came from people you wouldn’t expect them from.”
Hughes led the Cougars with 17 points and Slatter finished with 13.
Bailey Huser led the Cardinals with 18 points.
Craig takes an 8-4 Big Eight and 11-4 overall record into Saturday night’s game at Beloit.
