Willis, Spartans pull away from Vikings
Janesville Parker's boys basketball team put together a second straight solid outing Wednesday night.
Coming off an impressive overtime win over Middleton last Saturday, the Vikings pushed state-ranked Madison Memorial for three quarters.
Unfortunately for Parker, poor shooting spoiled any hopes of an upset.
Darral Willis had 22 points and 18 rebounds to help Memorial pull away for a 76-59 Big Eight Conference win.
Parker (4-10, 2-9) trailed by only six at half but could not overcome its shooting woes. The Vikings were 10-42 the second half.
“We were stuck on 38 for quite awhile despite having some good looks and good shots,” Parker coach Ryan Masterson said. “We missed some layups and too many free throws.
“I can't fault our effort, though. With the weather and everything, and not having school, I was really pleased with the way we came out and played.”
Memorial (15-3, 13-1), which has won 10 straight Big Eight titles, pushed a 6-point halftime lead to double digits in the third quarter thanks to Willis. The smooth 6-foot-7 senior forward scored the Spartans' first six points of the second half to push the lead to 39-29 with 5:38 left in the quarter. Parker got within six again on two Cullen Osmond free throws with 4:08 left in the third, but a 8-3 run by Memorial made it 49-38 after three. The Vikings would get no closer than nine in the fourth.
Osmond, J.J. Scott and Adam Thompson had 13 points each to lead Parker, which trailed 15-13 after one quarter.
“It's frustrating because we had a chance to put some pressure on them if we make a couple of shots,” Masterson said.
“But there's a reason Memorial is where they're at year in and year out. They play under control and make plays when they have to.”
Parker hosts Beloit Memorial on Friday night.
