A first-quarter shutout helped Janesville Craig’s girls basketball team cruise to a win Saturday night.

The Cougars held Madison West scoreless in the first quarter in taking an 18-0 lead and continued to pull away after that for a 56-22 Big Eight Conference win.

Craig got 16 points from Al Hughes and 11 players scored for the Cougars.

“We talked about keeping the intensity up and keeping your foot on the gas when you get a team down, and we were able to do that tonight,” Craig coach Kerry Storbakken said. “It was another great start for us tonight, keyed by a couple of 3s from Hughes.

“I really like the way this team is playing right now and the direction we’re headed. We’re getting strong play up and down the bench when our starters need a breather.”

Craig (10-3, 7-3) hosts second-place Verona on Friday night.
