Ann Henschel Gjertsen formerly from Nekoosa, WI, and currently at St. Elizabeth Home in Janesville, died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2014, a day after celebrating her 102nd birthday with her loving family. Ann was born on Jan. 13, 1912, in Portage County, Town of Grant, Bancroft, WI, the eleventh and youngest child of immigrants, Jacob and Mary (Nemec) Wanicheck. She attended the local schools and remained on the farm taking care of the household duties for her brothers and father until her father's death. Ann graduated from the Modern School of Beauty Culture in Milwaukee, in 1936, and continued her education by attending night classes at several schools. She owned and operated her own salon, called the Beauty Nook, in Nekoosa, for 35 years. She loved her many patrons at her beauty salon and many of them became lifelong friends. She married Fred Henschel on April 6, 1938, and they had one daughter, Jewel Henschel Liebenstein. Ann and Fred enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening and summer vacations with their family. He died in 1967. She married George Gjertsen on Oct. 16, 1976, and they enjoyed many years of golfing, card groups, gardening, traveling, dinners with friends, and driving for the Meals on Wheels. George died on Nov. 14, 2002. Ann's favorite pastimes were gardening in her flower garden, playing golf and bridge and in later years playing pool with her friends at the Angelus apartments. She was a member of the Sacred Heart PCCW, church choir, and AARP. She also enjoyed craft work, and coin and stamp collecting.

Ann is survived by her daughter, Jewel (Henschel) Liebenstein of Janesville; grandsons, Michael Liebenstein, Jr. of Taiwan; Eric M. Liebenstein of Sayner, WI; and granddaughter and namesake, Anne Marie (Mike) Winters of Mequon. Her great-grandchildren include Matthew Winters and Megan Winters from Mequon; and granddaughter, Brookie Liebenstein of Sayner. She also is survived by her son in-law, Mike Liebenstein, Sr., whom she called "her boy" and whom she loved very, very much. Ann is also survived by her stepdaughter, Gail Gjertsen Lowrey and her family from Wis. Rapids; and several nieces, nephews; and a special friend and golf partner, Kathy Scampfer of Lake Arrowhead. She was preceded in death by Fred Henschel; George Gjertsen; six brothers; four sisters; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 18th at SACRED HEART CATHOLIC CHURCH in Nekoosa. The Rev. John Swing will officiate. Burial will be in Nekoosa's Riverside Cemetery.
