Janesville Craig’s boys basketball team lost a free-throw contest Saturday night.

Middleton made 24 free throws for the game, including 13 in the fourth quarter, in rallying for a 70-69 Big Eight Conference win.

Derek Rongstad, who finished with 24 points, hit six free throws for the Cardinals down the stretch to preserve the win.

Craig (5-7, 3-6) got within two at 68-66 with six seconds left on Nolan Maresch’s free throw, but Rongstad pulled down a rebound off Maresch’s missed shot and made two free throws with four seconds to push the lead to four. Maresch made a half-court shot at the buzzer for the final margin.

Mike Murphy of Craig led all scorers with 25 points, including five 3-point baskets. The Cougars were outscored 24-11 at the foul line.

Craig hosts Janesville Parker at 7 p.m. Tuesday night.
