VERONA--With three starters out of the lineup, Janesville Parker High’s boys basketball team was facing big odds against winning at Verona on Thursday night.

The odds proved true as the Wildcats breezed to a 63-40 Big Eight Conference victory.

“We played without three starters due to suspensions and things,” Parker coach Ryan Masterson said. “Obviously that made things difficult, but I’m really proud of our guys.

“We played with a shorter bench and fell behind when we only shot 19 percent in the first half. They did much better in the second half.”

The Vikings missed all 15 of their 3-point attempts in the first half. Verona used a 20-4 second-quarter advantage to build a 33-12 halftime lead.

Cole Schmitz led Verona with 14 points.

Parker, 1-6 in the Big Eight and 3-7 overall, is off until Tuesday when the Vikings take on Janesville Craig.

“Hopefully we’ll have at least two of those guys back,” Masterson said.
