Kenneth William "Mike" Dooley, Janesville, WI
January 2, 2014
Kenneth William (Mike) Dooley, age 85, died Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014, at Cedar Crest Memory Care Residence. He was born in Lincoln, IL, to Olin and Virginia (Pfeifer) Dooley. He graduated from Greenup High School, Greenup, IL, in 1946, where he excelled academically and on the basketball team. He graduated from St. Louis University, with a B.S. degree in Chemistry. He was drafted and served during the Korean Conflict from 1951 to 1953. He retired from General Motors as Materials Director after thirty-eight years of employment. He rose every day between four and five a.m. to enjoy coffee and the birds singing before going to the plant.
Mike married Carolyn Jean (McCormick) on Sept. 12, 1953, at Christ the King Catholic Church in Greenup, IL. Together they raised seven children in the white house on the corner of Cherokee Road. For the fifty years they lived there, “Mr. Dooley” knew and was known fondly by everyone in the neighborhood. Throughout the years, his home hosted everything from a Craig High homecoming float-building project in the garage to a wedding reception in the backyard. Mike loved to sit on his front porch, read, doze, and enjoy the neighborhood activity. Nothing made him happier than having the driveway full of cars when his kids and grandkids came “home”.
Mike started jogging in 1968, and ran literally thousands of miles throughout Janesville, and eventually the Wisconsin countryside, as he trained for marathons. He ran many, but was most proud of running the Boston Marathon. Most of his family was there to see him finish. He was passionate about running and, although he loved the solitude of training, he also joined the Janesville Running Club, encouraging and championing younger runners in Janesville. He ran every day until just a couple of months before his move to Cedar Crest.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Carolyn. It did not surprise his family that Mike resided in Memory Care for just six months after her death. He is survived by his children: Timothy, Jane, Samuel, Elizabeth “Betsy”, Daniel Dooley, Amy (Larry) Hainstock, and Sarah (Stephen) Lanchak; and eight beloved grandchildren: (Tim) Abram and Margaret Dooley, (Betsy) Molly and Tess Borneman, Emma and Allison Hainstock, and Catherine and Nicholas Lanchak. He is also survived by his brothers and sister: Bob and Joyce Dooley of Greenup, IL, Marilyn and Cliff Stayton of Normal, IL, Jim and Kaye Dooley of Janesville, WI; and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral mass will be held at ST. JOHN VIANNEY CHURCH, Janesville, WI, on Friday, Jan. 10th at 11 a.m. Visitation will be held prior to the service at 10 a.m. at the CHURCH. Memorials may be made to the Cedar Crest Traditions Fund, for the staff at Cedar Crest. SCHNEIDER APFEL SCHNEIDER & SCHNEIDER FUNERAL HOME and CREMATORY is assisting the family. Mike's family would like to extend their gratitude to the entire staff at Cedar Crest for their warm and patient care of our father. Despite his diminished condition, they connected with him daily to give him reassurance and comfort. Dad was an amazing man, with a kind and gentle heart and a generous and indomitable spirit. We will miss him forever.
