Nonconference boys hoops: Evansville wins by one

Evansville survived Belleville’s long-range attack on Friday night.

The Blue Devils were locked in a neck-and-neck battle and emerged with a 63-62 nonconference home victory.

Sophomore Kyle Rutkowski scored 17 of his 20 points in the second and third quarters as Evansville built a 48-45 lead through three quarters.

Belleville hit eight 3-pointers, six in the first half and two in the fourth quarter as it attempted to come from behind but came up just short.

Matt Sperry added 14 points for Evansville while Brennen Banks had 10.

Josh Sormovsky scored 12 points and Andrew McCauley added 11 for the Panthers, who trailed 10-8 after one quarter.

Scott Gorsuch led the Whippets (3-5) with eight points.

Brodhead held Monticello to just two points in the second quarter and led 37-31 heading into the fourth.

Josiah DeLorme scored a game-high 18 points for the Cardinals, while Ned Slocum had 15.
